African Projects

BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso is one of Drop Inn Ministries largest projects.  In the town of Koudougou, in South West Burkina, we have built three schools that educate 400+ Aids orphans.  It was in September of 2011 that we opened our third school beside one of our existing ‘bush churches’ in the village of Godin.  The Drop Inn schools are held with great esteem throughout the entire education system in Burkina Faso and were ranked first and second in the examination results in 2011, resulting in an influx of entrance applications; however the school remain committed to catering solely for aids orphans.  Drop Inn has been able to fund the schools primarily through individual child sponsorships of £5 per month, which feeds, clothes and educates a child.

Alongside our partnering Pastor, Etienne, we have been involved in building churches and schools in ‘Bush Villages.’  By the end of 2011, Drop Inn Ministries had assisted in building 3 Bush Churches and 1 primary school.  We are currently in the process of building a secondary school so that children there have the option to continue their education to the same standard.  Without these new constructions, the people of this area would be without a place to worship and study.  Etienne’s vision is to continue to reach out to Bush Villages in order to plant churches and build schools.  To make this vision more of a reality, he has begun a Bible seminary to train young men for evangelism and outreach, and Drop Inn Ministries has been involved in some of the teaching taking place at this location.  Drop Inn Ministries is also involved with active outreach and support of widows, of which there are many, in Burkina Faso.

RWANDA

Rwanda is a beautiful African country that continues to endure the terrible aftermath of the genocide that took place in 1994.  In Rwanda, Drop Inn Ministries partners with an organization called Solace Ministries, which was founded by Jean Gakwandi, a survivor who lost many members of his family during the genocide and who, in turn, felt called by God to bring comfort to the many widows and orphans who remained in the area.

Drop Inn Ministries has taken the responsibility of building three centres in different towns in Rwanda where the widows and orphans come for counselling, receive medical treatment and learn new skills so that they can support themselves and their families.  One of these centres was opened in September 2009 and is in constant use.  The second, an Aids clinic, was completed and opened in the spring of 2011 and serves to help the multitudes of women who were raped during the country’s crisis.

KENYA

In Kenya, Drop Inn Ministries has partnered with a native missionary working to reach those living in Kawangware, a peri-urban (slum) area, located to the northwest of Nairobi.  The majority of the families living there are surviving on less than a pound a day—and that is if they are able to earn an income at all.  Despite the fact that this area is primarily considered ‘slum,’ it has the highest cost of living of its surrounding area.  Naturally therefore, there are high levels of malnutrition and joblessness, which has resulted in increasing crime levels.

Drop Inn Ministries continues to support the Church here, as well as the outreach efforts to the neediest of Kawangware and further afield to Lodwar, one of the biggest refugee camps in Kenya. In addition to this, Drop Inn Ministries have been able to send teachers to Kilifi, which is a small town 30 miles from Mombasa.

ZAMBIA

In 2011, Drop Inn Ministries began another new ministry in Africa, in the southern nation of Zambia.  Just like many other countries where Drop Inn carries out their work, Zambia has its own share of poverty, deprivation and need.  Although the World Bank described Zambia as “one of the world’s fastest economically reforming countries” in 2010, there still remains a high percentage of poverty.  This is especially true in rural areas where 78% of people live below the poverty level.

Some 585 miles north of the capital, Lusaka, is the town of Kasama, where Drop Inn is supplying support to teachers in three schools.  Our largest project in Zambia is an addition three hours drive from this area in a village called Kalikeka.  There we have partnered with a pastor, his congregation and the village people in building a school for the children of this entire area.

GHANA

Neighbours of Burkina Faso in West Africa, Ghana is one of the few English speaking countries in that region of the continent.  Ghana is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world and is also home to Lake Volta, the largest artificial lake in the world by surface area.  It boasts too of huge natural resources, including oil, timber and diamonds, yet despite this fact, many of its people living in poverty.  Drop Inn works alongside a missionary there who supports church leaders, who are very poor themselves.  The church leaders he ministers to are actively involved in community outreach, specifically to the areas poor and needy.  Our missionary partner here is also actively associated with church planting in Accra—Ghana’s capital city.

Some 24 million people reside in Ghana, comprising an estimated 109 distinct people groups.  Of these, 19% are considered unreached.  Some sources depict Ghana as a ‘Christian nation’  labelling over 70% of the population as Christians.  Upon further look, however, millions of these ‘believers’ have no official tie to the Church.
